Can Allergies Cause A Flare-Up Of TMD Symptoms?
Do you suffer from allergies? Over the past few years, patients who suffer from various forms of allergies, particularly seasonal allergies, have been having a rough time. Pollen counts have been extremely high, and in our area, with all of the trees, it can be problematic. Have you ever noticed a flare-up of your TMD symptoms following a time when your allergies were at their worst? If not, be sure to pay close attention during the next allergy season. It is not uncommon for there to be a link between the two issues.
How Do Allergies Affect TMD?
If you or a loved one have a problem with allergies, think back to the last time you were suffering. Your nose is typically stuffy, making it difficult to breathe through your nose. This occurs due to the swelling of the sinuses. Since our bodies need oxygen to survive, the only other way to get oxygen into the lungs is through the mouth. Unfortunately, prolonged mouth breathing can lead to issues with your TMD. It is especially important to treat the allergies you are suffering from to hopefully alleviate symptoms.
Ways to Reduce Allergies
We recommend being mindful of times that your allergies are at their worst. Most people who have seasonal allergies suffer more during the fall and spring. There are also those who have allergies to items in the home such as dust. These are some tips to try to combat allergies:
- Take an antihistamine
- Keep windows shut
- Avoid being outdoors when pollen counts are high
- Use a furnace filter designed to assist with allergies
- After spending the day outdoors, immediately change clothes and shower if possible
- Avoid rubbing your hands on your eyes and face
- Dust and vacuum your house regularly
- Visit an allergist if your symptoms are regular and severe
