Summer Doesn’t Have To Be Dreadful When You Have Sleep Apnea
Do you suffer from sleep apnea and are not looking forward to the summer? Summer is a time many people enjoy. Warm temperatures, long summer days, traveling, and outdoor cookouts where you are free to indulge are some of the perks of summer. However, if you experience sleep apnea, you might not be so excited to experience what others love about the summer. We want to share some tips to help you enjoy the summer while still keeping your sleep apnea symptoms at bay. Read on to learn more about these tips.
Do You Dread Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot?
If you have sleep apnea symptoms, then you know that the heat is not always your friend when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Luckily in the Pacific Northwest, we don’t have an abundance of extremely hot days, but we do experience summer heat from time to time. Heat might come into play if you are traveling this summer to a warmer destination. We suggest preparing for bed earlier in the day by making sure the shades are down, a fan is on, and running an air conditioner if it is available. A cooler bedroom results in a better night’s sleep.
Drink More Water
Staying hydrated is a plus when dealing with sleep apnea because dehydration can aggravate your condition. This is especially important during the summer when heat may be a factor. We also suggest drinking water evenly throughout the day so you do not need to use the bathroom during the night.
Plan for Travel
If you will be traveling this summer, we recommend planning ahead. Be sure to get a good sleep the night prior to travel as days can become a little frantic. If you are driving, be sure to add in some rest stops and don’t push yourself if you become tired.
Plan Meals and Beverages
Be sure to enjoy your favorite foods and beverages in moderation. Heavy meals and alcohol can aggravate sleeping patterns. It is best to enjoy a light dinner and plan to enjoy cocktails in the early evening so as to not affect sleep.
